Facilitating Community and Belonging in the Virtual Workspace

With the shift to remote work, maintaining a sense of community and belonging in the workplace has become increasingly challenging. Here’s a look at some research-based insights and practical strategies for fostering a positive virtual work environment.

Understanding Community and Belonging

Community is a group of people who share interests, goals, or attitudes. Belonging is the sense of being happy and comfortable as part of a community. It involves experiencing positive relationships, feeling accepted, and identification with the group.

Importance of Community and Belonging at Work

Community and belonging at work are contributors to organizational success. Research shows that experiencing community and belonging:

  • Improves Physical and Mental Health: Positive social support correlates with better health outcomes.
  • Increases Self-Efficacy: Greater belief in one’s ability to succeed, which contributes to confidence.
  • Enhances Social Connection: Better understanding of one’s own values and identity and relationships with others.
  • Increases Engagement and Productivity: Studies show a 56% increase in job performance and a 50% drop in turnover risk.

Impact of Remote Work on Community and Belonging

With the mass shift to remote work during the COVID-19 pandemic, both companies and employees were required to adapt to the communication, organizational, behavioural, and technological changes. Four years later, remote work, whether fully remote or hybrid, is still common today. While remote work has many benefits, including flexibility, accessibility, productivity, work-life balance, and greater job satisfaction, it has also created challenges in communication and collaboration.

Challenges of Remote Work: Despite its benefits, research demonstrates that remote work has also created challenges in the workplace. These include:

  • Static and Siloed Collaboration: Employees are more likely to be limited to working with the same colleagues.
  • Reduced Informal Interactions: Fewer casual chats in hallways or break rooms.
  • Decreased Knowledge Transfer: Fewer mentorship opportunities for younger colleagues.
  • Lower Interaction Initiation: More effort is required to reach out through email or messaging.
  • Technical Challenges: Connectivity issues or lack of familiarity with platforms.

Ultimately, all of these challenges lead to increased feelings of loneliness, which can lead to depression and insomnia. This can have profound impacts on the workplace, as employees that feel lonely or a low sense of belonging are less engaged, put in less effort at work, and use sick days more frequently. This loss of overall productively negatively impacts the success and long term growth of a business.

Strategies to Foster Community and Belonging

We can see that it is important for employees to experience community and belonging at work for an organization to thrive and succeed. Here are some ways you can foster community and belonging in your workplace:

1. Team Building and Socials

  • Organize formal and informal networking activities, such as team-building events, virtual coffee chats, annual work conferences, and more, to encourage interaction and participation.
  • Gather feedback to tailor activities to team preferences.
  • Create networking opportunities and areas for growth.

2. Communication Channels

  • Provide training and support for familiarization with communication platforms.
  • Establish clear guidelines for using each communication channel.
  • Encourage regular check-ins and updates for engagement.

3. Speed Friending

  • Create small groups of 3-5 members for two-minute interactions.
  • Rotate group members periodically for wider connections.
  • Provide prompts to guide discussions.

4. Emotional Well-Being Support

  • Foster a culture of openness and support around mental health.
  • Encourage regular breaks, exercise, and mindfulness.
  • Promote work-life balance by discussing expectations for work hours.
