When you think of workplace injuries, what do you picture? We often associate workplace injuries with major accidents however, many workplace injuries occur over time and are caused by repetitive tasks resulting in muscle and joint strain. While it may sound minor, the impact of Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSI) can be significant. In fact, they are the most common type of injury found in the office.

Ergonomic hazards
  • Repetition: Making the same motion over and over
  • Awkward Posture: Poor positioning can put strain on areas of the body including wrists and back
  • Duration: The repetition of tasks for long periods of time
  • Stationary position: Remaining in one position for too long
Preventing injuries with ergonomics

Ergonomics is defined by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as the scientific study of people at work. The goal of ergonomics is to reduce, prevent and/or eliminate injuries associated with the overuse of specific muscles and tissues due to awkward posture or repeated tasks. Some possible ergonomic solutions include:

  • Optimal set of equipment: Ensuring desk, chair and accessories are all fitted appropriately to the individual and are at optimal height
  • Task redesign: Reducing repetitions, increasing rest time between repetitions, rotation between tasks
  • Providing opportunities to change position and posture throughout the day
